    Description

    >Offered here for your consideration is an
    old & original
1948 vintage Western Union telegram sent to University of Oregon Ducks quarterback NORM VAN BROCKLIN one day prior to the 1949 Cotton Bowl
    !!
    Please see all
    three
photos, as they are an important part of my description. This unique and
    one-of-a-kind
piece of vintage sports memorabilia was acquired through a leading sports memorabilia catalog auction; the offered telegram was part of a group lot of Univ. of Oregon-related material related to
    Norm Van Brocklin
and was a part of his personal collection. My 3rd photo shows the catalog page that pictures Van Brocklin as well as the group lot of items that I acquired (the catalog's lot description mentions the
    1949 Cotton Bowl
    -related
telegrams; please see close-up). This vintage
    Western Union telegram
is dated Dec. 31, 1948 - only one day prior to the Cotton Bowl. This attractive
    "Congratulations"
telegram is addressed to Norman Van Brocklin, c/o the
    University of Oregon
    football team. It reads:
"Congratulations and best of luck, Stub. All rooting for you and team"
    ("Stub" was Van Brocklin's nickname).

    History
    : the
    1949 Cotton Bowl
    was played in
    Dallas, Texas
    on Jan. 1, 1949. The
    Oregon Ducks
    were led by star quarterback
    Norm Van Brocklin
, while the SMU Mustangs were led by Heisman Trophy winner Doak Walker. This bowl appearance by the Ducks was a rare one, as they had only appeared in two prior bowl games, the last being the 1920 Rose Bowl. After being shutout for three quarters, Oregon came back to score 13 points in the final quarter but were unable to overcome their early deficit, losing 21-13. The winning buyer for this telegram will receive not only this
    rare
telegram, but a copy of the signed Letter of Provenance from the Van Brocklin family. As described by the catalog auction: "Norm Van Brocklin went on to an exceptional pro career in the N.F.L. with the
    Los Angeles Rams
    and the
    Philadelphia Eagles
, winning a World Championship with each team. Known as a prolific passer, Van Brocklin is widely regarded as having largely contributed to re-shaping the Qb position during the era in which he played. His record of 554 passing yards during a pro game still stands to date, even with the new era of pass-heavy offenses seen in the NFL today".
