Vintage Mexican Hand Carved Wooden Ceremonial Demon Dog Mask With Leather Ears

On offer, we have a vintage or possibly antique mask. This is hand carved wooden face of a demon dog. He has floppy ears made of horse or cowhide.Inside his open mouth there's a leather tongue. His painted whiskers are very cat-like, but the floppy ears say dog.  He has a wooden patch repair on his forehead under an ear and attached rope for hanging. This mask measures 8 1/2" long, just under 8" wide (not counting the ears) and 8" deep. Very sturdy, it weighs 1 pound 13.7 ounces.
My friend purchased this at an art gallery in Los Angeles decades ago. He was told it is Mexican, but some friends think it is from Guatemala or Ecuador. Everyone agrees it is extraordinary and very old.
This is
in excellent condition for its age and possible use. The thick wood has some cracks and the ears are very stiff. His teeth once had white paint that has mostly worn off. Please view my photographs for more description.
