This lovely doll was for display only and never played with. Any imperfections in the doll or clothing are due to age rather than handling. All her clothing is original. The red velvet gown is in very good condition, although the sheer underskirt has a tiny, tiny hole which is covered by the red overskirt. The hoop slip needs some mending as do the pantaloons, both of sheer, delicate fabric. The teddy is very fragile and due to the age of the delicate material has some tears. The doll has flirty eyes - her eyes move up and down and right to left, almost like she is following you. She was purchased in in Italy around 1959.
She has beautiful long eyelashes, painted nails and beautiful coloring.
There is a squeaker box in her tummy, but it doesn't work.
There is a crack along her back where she was seamed together, but it is covered by the clothing. There is a tiny crack at the front neckline also. These are due to age, not wear, and, if desired, can probably be repaired by an expert.
The Fata Doll Factory Milano, Italy manufactured dolls from 1929 to late 1960s. Until the 1960s the doll was considered a valuable object rather than a toy and as such was to be displayed on the bed of young brides as a sign of good luck. This phenomenon of the "doll on the bed" was widespread as demonstrated by the large number of dolls dressed as "damina" (lady), such as this particular doll, which were sold not only in Italy but also abroad.
FATA dolls are unmarked and had a paper tag stapled to clothing, but unfortunately her tag is missing.
