This kit, a US Recording Media exclusive for 1/4" recording tape (open reel and 8-tracks), is really nice since it doesn't sacrifice quality, is an outstanding value, and can be used for many years. The kit comes with one dual crosscut industrial aerospace grade polymer TME-S15N professional splicing block with a proprietary Surelock™ center tape groove, plus one crosscut at 45 degrees the other at 90 degrees.
Our proprietary Surelock™ center tape groove is designed to gently hold your tape ends in place for a perfect splice without holding the ends down with adhesive tape or your fingers With other blocks now being sold around the internet, your recording tape will swim around in the groove, your splice will suck, and you will find your editing session is more like herding cats. Our block inspectors have included a piece of leader or recording tape in the tape groove for shipment to show you how nicely the tape groove works with properly slit media.
A TME® exclusive, the crosscut cleaning channel holes gather tape editing particles and other crud from the bottom of the blade channels, and can be easily cleaned using compressed air.
Note: The cross cut slots for cutting your media are designed for maximum .009" thickness blades. Do not use thicker blades or you can damage any block and void your warranty. ALWAYS use a sharp stainless steel media blade.
Also included is one 82 FT roll of top selling TME® splicing tape ( the number one brand of recording accessories in the country) Lastly, you get one USA Made .009" thick stainless steel GEM® triple facet cut media edge cutting blade. Additional quantities are available from US Recording.
WARNING: The included media blade is very sharp. DO NOT EAT. Keep away from animals and children, and any possibly unstable people.
Cleaning Tip: Use a soft cloth to clean your block and renew the shine. You can also use 91% pure isopropyl to clean finger oils, etc off the block.
Here's Some Help in Choosing a Splicing Block:
When investing in a splicing block, there's a few important things to nail down:
1. First of all, what tape width are you splicing? Blocks come in everything from .150 width for audio cassettes to 2" for pro studio tape.
2. The second thing is what material is the block made from? There's two basic materials used by both Editall® and US Recording: Polymer and Aluminum. The polymer blocks are very rugged and forgiving and to save you lots of money since the polymer blocks are formed with the tape groove and access holes all at once rather than having to machine them separately.
Aluminum blocks
WILL
corrode if not anodized. (See photo of a corrosion test of a competitor's non-anodized blocks. ) Splicing your tapes on a corroded splicing block is VERY bad for tapes. In fact, just handling the block, our tester's hands got filthy black aluminum corrosion on them. Aluminum anodizing seals the pores of the metal, keeps it from corroding, and makes the surface much much harder. We don't advise buying any aluminum blocks that aren't anodized because they are guaranteed to corrode.
A splicing block has two main functions it must meet:
1. The basic reason for buying a splicing block is to align your tapes and hold the tape ends in place so you can cut the tape ends and and splice them together without a gap or crooked alignment. If the tapes are not held in place, the block is nearly useless because it's very difficult to get a good splice when your tape is swimming around in the groove.
2. It has to do the above without damaging your tapes with sharp edges or contamination like aluminum corrosion.
Note: We tested competitors' blocks and they miserably failed in both of these conditions meaning they were pretty much useless. Not only did the tape swim around in the groove, but splicing was like herding cats! Never buy a non-anodized aluminum splicing block and we don't care who makes it! Always ask before buying a block, and if you're told "you don't need that", move on! Please see photo.
Thank you!
