Circa 1970s Leather Highlander Mask from Huejotzingo, Puebla Mexico
Depicting a French Soldier for Carnival de Huejotzingo as a depiction of the "Battle of the 5th of May."
Each regiment has its own style of costume; Regiments are distinguished by the color and style of eyebrow, mustache, and beards.
Beautiful hand stitching, molded-painted-leather, dyed wool mustache and eyebrows
This is a dying craft unfortunately and these have been come scarce objects.
Some staining on the reverse of the mask.
each regiment has its own style of costume, almost all of the masks are made from molded leather, as seen here.
The groups are distinguished by facial painting and the color and style of eyebrow, mustache, and beards. My son purchased this new.
There are three tiny pin-size holes on the mask that small twine once sat and then attached to larger silk-based ribbons for wearing during dance.
Currently the mask has micro-filament for hanging
