Suchiapa, a Chiapanec town in Chiapas, Mexico is famous for its costumed jaguar dancers. The wooden jaguar mask is worn on top of the dancer's head.
The Calalá dance is original from the municipality of Suchiapa Chiapas, it is an ancestral tradition loved and respected by the Suchiapanecos.
The
Calalá Dance
is a dance of pre-Hispanic origin that was used to scare away evil and ask for a good harvest. It is performed during the festivities of Corpus Christi (Holy Sacrament of the Altar). Product of religious syncretism, and in a ritual way it is staged on Corpus Christi day in the town of Suchiapa, where it emerged and that over time it took to neighboring municipalities and of the same ethnic group such as Acala, El Parral and Chiapa de Roe deer. Currently the dance is used to carry enrramos, perform rituals for the rain or visit a saint. These populations have in common that they come from the Chiapas culture, so that they share customs and traditions. Being Suchiapa where this ancient dance has been preserved as is all the signs and mysticism.
