    Description

This is a reproduction of an Aztec face mask. It was made in Mexico and it is made out of either terracotta or clay. I believe it is made out of clay as opposed to terracotta as it is not as bright or orange as terracotta and it has black specks in it.
Aztec masks were made to be used as ornaments to worship their gods, and they would sometimes be worn as part of a ritual, or in death, known as a death mask.
One of the common types of masks had snakes on it and these masks were typically used for worship, whether as a display in a temple, or worn by a priest. This particular mask is of a person wearing a head piece, and on the head piece is a smiling snake who represents either the god Quetzalcoatl or Tlaloc.
I believe this mask represents a death mask as those were often made with closed eyes and open mouthed. So while it looks like his eyes are open, there is no actual hole for a live person to look through.
It comes with a wire to hang it but I don’t know if I trust it to hang on so use at your own risk. Also be careful as the wire is quite sharp!!!!! I would recommend carefully changing the wire!
