This mask is called “pito o colán” The mask provides the possibility to those who wear it, to transform into a “Jaguar God”, a deity of Mesoamerican cultures, and to perform that duality between human and divine. This mask has a small hole in the top to facilitate hanging.
In the “Jaguar Dance”, one of the dancers carries the mask, starring in the role of the beast, and another dancer assumes the role of the hunter (“rastrero o rastreador”), always accompanied by “perra maravilla” (the wonderful dog), who is in charge of sniffing the tracks of the pursued jaguar. Modern Mexican masks can be grouped in two categories: traditional masks used in celebration and ceremonial dances and decorative masks made for aesthetic purposes and usually bought by collectors or foreign tourists.
