New Tapes are easily found on Ebay. Look for the brands Ampex, TDK, Sony, Basf, Maxell or Memorex. Avoid buying tapes over 1800 ft, as they are longer and thinner and can damage motors. Remember that this machine accepts tapes up to 7" inches.
Metal tapes can also be found on Ebay. Type: Metal Take up reel and look for the brands AKAI, REALISTIC, MEISTER, SONY, PIONEER, TDK and others. Always appears excellent offers.
You will be bidding on this very nice reel to reel player made by Akai in Japan.
This unit find in perfect condition. CLEAN And LUBRICATED. Heads are demagnetized.
The Audio board was completely cleaned and lubed with Deoxit D5 and all electrolytic capacitors, transistors and power supply capacitors  on audio/main board works great with no corrosion and no leaking. Everything still are original.
It is assumed that any bidder will understand how these reel to reel recorders oerate and the characteristics of recorded tape both new and old. Questions are of course welcome and encouraged as this unit can be complicated to one that is not familiar with reel recorders/players.
This deck is 40+ years old and was stored for some time. Buying vintage equipment is not the same as going to Best Buy and buying a new Sony surround receiver. That being said keep this in mind when buying.

This unit does not come with any wires to hookup....it uses standard RCA cables or a DIN connection.

When we works on a tape deck, for instance, we does not simply test it in all modes for several minutes to make certain it works. WE ACTUALLY USES THE MACHINE FOR A WEEK, playing and recording many hours of tape, and actually uses the tape machines to record from AM/FM, CD or cassette to reel to reel tape, and if any glitches or abnormalities appear during this process they are addressed and corrected and the use of the machine continues until we are
absolutely certain that the machine is ready to be sold and will not deliver any unwanted surprises to its new owner. We will not release a machine for sale until he is absolutely certain it will perform flawlessly on a consistent day-to-day basis after it is shipped.

Description
The Akai 1722W is a robustly constructed complete stereo tape recorder unit with built-in phono amp and large 5 x 7 inch speakers. It is instantly convertible to a full bodied Public Address System.
This model is equipped with a Tape Selector Switch facilitating the use of high performance wide range tape. Setting this switch according to the tape being used adjusts the equalization for better frequency response characteristics.
A new 3-Way Speaker Switch (Mute/Recording Monitor, Normal, PA) provides proper signal output for private headphone listening or monitoring during recording, speaker output, or Public Address System.
In keeping with Akai's top quality parts utilization policy, the 1722W incorporates top quality parts and features robust construction and sturdy mechanism. Our dependable two lever control system ensures further durability.
A special feature of this model is the Automatic Shut-OFF function of the unit. When the Automatic Shut-Off Switch is set to ON position, the power of the entire unit is cut at the end of the tape. A very convenient feature should the recorder be left unattended.
The 1722W is also equipped with pause control for momentarily suspending tape travel during recording or playback. Especially useful for editing tape during recording. Just lift the Pause Lever when a certain portion of the program is not desired. Pause control also permits optimum adjustment and balance of recording level prior to recording for consistent signal level input. Convenient Start Button release.
