    Description

On offer here is a nice
antique Mexican 'Moor' mask from Guerrero, Mexico
and dates from about the late 19th century (1880's) to the early 20th century (1910's). The mask is made of wood and is elaborately carved with hair and beard in curls to mimic the coarser hair of Moors from Northern Africa. We surmise the mask was created for the traditional 'Dia de los Muertes' or 'Day of the Dead' celebration / holiday.
The mask measures 35.5 inches tall by 12.5 inches wide. There are eye slits cut just beneath the painted eyes so the wearer can see. Most of the original polychrome paint has flaked off over the years and could be restored, but we feel this would detract from the age and authenticity of the piece. There is one older repair to the edge of one of the beard sections, but is barely perceptible.
This is among the largest and most displayable authentic Mexican ceremonial masks on the market and we feel it would add to most any decor or collector wanting to display folk art of this type.
