FOUL for the sake of a good FIGHT
Even before the Marquis of Queens-
berry, the rules of prizefighting firmly
stated: “A blow struck below the waist-
band shall be deemed foul.” In Toronto
last week, the brawling Canadian chal-
lenger. George Chuvalo (below, right),
landed punch after punch below the
waistband of Heavyweight Champion
Muhammad Ali—Cassius Clay. The ref-
eree—another Canadian—condoned the
fouls for the sake of “a good fight.” Ap-
parently unaffected by the below-belt
pounding. Clay did not complain and
successfully defended his title by pum-
meling Chuvalo until his knuckles were
nearly as swollen as the challenger's face.
To Chuvalo went the sore distinction of
being the first man to stay on his feet with
the champ for a full 15 rounds—and the
first fighter in memory to be given unlim-
ited use of the low blow in a title fight.
